To borrow from a Rolling Stones tune of many years ago, “summer’s here and the time is right for (stopping) fighting in the street boys (and girls).” The HBPA, BCTOBA and the CTHS have been making a concerted effort to focus on the very real problems we are facing and stop skirmishing with each other. An informal alliance has been dealing with issues involving the track operator, government in general and the Horse Racing Industry Management Committee in particular. The HBPA recently joined with TOBA in a presentation to the Committee that spoke to a number of concerns the thoroughbreds have about the future. We have together resolved some things to the benefit of all horsepeople, which is not to say that there are not a lot of unresolved issues out there to deal with. There are. But here is a fact: squabbling right now is the equivalent of two guys fighting on the deck of the Titanic to see who gets to be captain. No matter who wins, there is still one hell of an iceberg up ahead. More
