- Terry Black
-
Terry Black passed away recently at her Kelowna home at the age of 69. She left too soon, but she passed surrounded by family after taking full advantage of the years she did have.
She made her mark in British Columbia as a small-scale breeder who achieved large-scale success. A mare named Future Equity turned into something of a blue hen for her and produced the BC Derby winner Cruising Kat and Sungold Wonder who took the Jack Diamond Futurity. For good measure Future Equity threw in a couple of stakes placed horses as well, including Future Flash who placed in 3 stakes and won $115,000.
Terry preferred to produce horses for the market, but in later years she was not averse to racing the ones that did not sell. However, aside from her success as a breeder, her greatest contributions were made serving the breeding industry. She put in 8 years as a director of the BC Division of the CTHS and 6 years for the national organization. In recent years she put in a tremendous amount of time working on taxation issues for the thoroughbred industry and was always a willing and gracious source of information for new or aspiring breeders.
Terry Black will be missed and the void she leaves in the thoroughbred community will not be easily filled. The family requests that those wishing to remember her do so with a donation to the Canadian Cancer Society for Ovarian Cancer Research.
